National Recreational Fishing Conference Report

In 2011 the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry released the document “Recreational Fishing Industry Development Strategy: 2011 and beyond”. The strategy identified and provided funding for 10 projects as part of the implementation of the strategy. This included a national recreational fishing conference.

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation provided initial funding for the conference. A number of organisations also provided sponsorship for the conference. Sponsors were:

  • Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (conference partner level 1)
  • Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (conference partner level 1)
  • Fish Habitat Network (conference partner level 2)
  • Australian Communications and Media Authority (conference support sponsor)
  • Australian Fishing Trade Association (bronze sponsor)
  • Murray-Darling Basin Authority (bronze sponsor)
  • Primary Industries Research South Australia (lectern signage)
  • Southern Cross Austereo (media sponsor)

The development of the conference was overseen by a steering committee whose members were:

  • Bill Sawynok, Principal Investigator (Recfishing Research)
  • Russell Conway (Recfish Australia)
  • Allan Hansard/Doug Joyner (Australian Fishing Trade Association)
  • Peter Horvat/Crispian Ashby (Fisheries Research and Development Corporation)
  • Lorraine Hitch/Melanie Buckley (Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry)
  • Matt Barwick (Recfishing Research)
  • Kerrie Wise (Destination Conference and Incentive)

Destination Conference and Incentive (DCI) were contracted to manage the conference in conjunction with the steering committee. The work of the DCI staff that helped make the conference a success is acknowledged.
